View Full Version : contents of CDs
v902

I am currently downloading the 4 ISO's for FreeBSD and am wondering what is on the 4? I dont need certain things (ie. X, Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc.) So I am wondering if there is a place where it says the contents of the ISO's because I am to lazy to burn all of them and wouldn't want to waste some CDs'.
Thanks,
Vlad

AFAIK, All you need for the main install is the first cd. At least I was never asked for another one during install. I think the other cds contain ready to go ports and packages so you dont have to download and compile everything.

I'll confirm that junkie, all you need is the first cd, additional cd's just contain precompiled packages, those come in handy if you don't have a high speed connection or if you run in an environment where you might be able to upgradefor a while.

anyone know why there are only two ISOs for 5.0, and 4+ for all of the earlier releases?

I believe the new package format using bzip instead of gzip saves a lot of disk space, plus maybe they didn't include as many precompiled binaries with this release. I'm just stabbing in the dark here so if anyone else actually knows or can point to a proper doc explaining feel free.

either way, if I can get a functional desktop system out of it, I'll be quite happy.

All you need to get the system up and running is the first disk the second is a live filesystem ( ie: recue disk ). 5.0 comes with minimal packages for you to get the barebone desktop up and running ( kde 3.0.x, ,gnome, windowmaker, XFree86, etc... ). Other versions come with four disks which include install disk one, live file system disk2, and cvs + ports on the third and fourth disk. Hope that cleared it up a bit.
EDIT: elmore you are correct the new package format is .tbz

so all I need for a functional system is disc 1, disc two is just a bootable CD system? in that case why is disc 2 so small (270MB)?

Ummm how big do think a base system is?
I've got a full featured base Unix system running on a 30MB flash card.

Again, its just a live file system you dont need it but it would be a good a idea to have it around in case something goes wrong. Reason why it is small is that it only has essential system utils ( no xserver just CLI ) to patch up your box in worst case scenario.

gotcha, didn't think essential system utilities would be almost 300 megs, but anyway... I have a PicoBSD floppy, and it boots and has a system on it in 1.44 megs.... would anyone care to elaborate on why exactly it's 270 megs?

I'm not exactly sure why in either case I've never really touched anything but disk 1. If I screw it up, I just reinstall, cause the wholeinstall process only takes like 10 minutes if you have a cd. The second cd would be nice to have I suppose. Either way we'll get you up and running. :)

I use to use the CD's, and all of them. After awile, it became very manotinous, and stuck with FTP. More stuff, and didn't have to fumble through CD's, and have to switch CD's through the install.

well, if I had an unlimited broadband connection I'd likely do FTP installs, but on dial-up it's kinda hard :P
I plan to just wipe off one of my old CD-RWs and should get the install going tonight :) mess with it for weeks until I get stuff at least going (damn converted windows box...)

maybe I won't get the install going tonight... or ever, I seem to have hit some kind of hangup with the server, and my download stopped and I can't reconnect to the FTP at 99% with less than 100k left to go.... as could be expected after downloading 580 megs on dial-up and having it crap out in the last 100k.... I'm a tad upset...

well, I accidentally put my last bost in the wrong thread, but I might as well update it here too, the ISO DID finish downloading, and it did boot... so far all is going well, I'll likely post back in the thread I started if I have any major trouble
(sorry for jacking this thread :P)
