Hi! I reinstalled FreeBSD Saturday and am having a few issues with getting it setup.
First I got an error that I think may be the mouse not being setup. But here is the text:
xf86EnableIO: Failed to open /dev/io for extended I/O
Also, what is the proper way to get a USB mouse to work? In dmesg I see that it is designated ums0, so would I tell X to just use /dev/ums0 ?
Thanks!

I've never had a problem with my usb mouse. Two things.
1. Make sure moused is enabled in your rc.conf
2. I generally set mouse section of my XFree86 file to auto.
See if that gets you anywhere.

I got the same error message when trying to start x, and so did this guy:

I do not know if this is your problem, but when I set my security level to medium, and rebooted, I could at least start x. Of course, now I have a problem with the mouse in X.
Hope this helps.

How about adding the SUID to the Xserver? This will allow you to run the xserver with root permission.

Well it was that security level problem, for the most part. I ended up finding out what was wrong with the mouse, and that is fixed. I had it set to the device /dev/ums0 and protocol auto. Changed that to what the configurator said and that is fixed.
I still cant run X as a normal user though. I am trying to figure out why, and although I am tempted to SUID X, I really dont want to unless necessary. But it definitely is a permission error.
I get a "Cannot open log file /var/log/XFree86.0.log" when trying to login as a user. Is there a group that I should add myself to?

Xserver needs to have SUID if you wish to run it under a non root account, the default permissions are fhe following
r-sr-sr-x Xwrapper-4

well that did the trick.
Thanks socomm and everyone else!
